While researching purchasing a pair of new ATV's for my wife and I, I visited all of the manufacturer's web-pages for information. The official Can-Am web-page was, and still is, advertising a promotion on "ALL NEW AND UNUSED OUTLANDERS..." stating that they come with either a 3 year warranty or some financing options. Not needing the finance options, I was excited about the 3 year warranty. I started shopping for a pair of Outlanders.
I found an official, licensed, Can-Am dealer, (650 miles away) that had the units I wanted at a great price. I made a deal on a purchase price for the two units, an 800Max and a 400,(three actually, I bought a DS for my son), and made arrangements to pick them up the next weekend.
I picked up my new toys and brought them home. I pulled them off of the trailer and put them into the shop. I pulled them out the following weekend to ride around the block and the Check Engine light comes on on the 800, so I take it to my local dealer for warranty service.
Upon checking on my warranty registration, they tell me I have SIX MONTHS worth of warranty. WHAT??? That can't be right. So I contact the dealer that I bought them from to get it fixed.
The dealer informs me that because I got a good deal on my units, that they only came with a six month warranty. This is BS. I contact Can-Am customer service. They inform me that the dealers are not required to participate in their promotions, and as such I am pretty much just out of luck. I DO however have the option of PURCHASING the extended warranty that I thought I already had.
So let this be a warning to all of you. My guess would be that a lot of you out there THINK that you have a lot more warranty than you do. CHECK IT OUT!!!
